On Sunday, June 1, as part of the Jazz Waves program of Pula’s Summer Cultural Season, the Aldevis Tibaldi Quartet will perform on the terrace of the Archaeological Museum of Istria, joined by Ares Tavolazzi, a prominent Italian double bassist and renowned jazz musician.
Aldevis Tibaldi is an Italian saxophonist and composer with a rich jazz career, currently living and working in London.
Born in Trieste in 1968, Tibaldi studied at the “Giuseppe Tartini” Conservatory. Since moving to London in 2004, he has collaborated with numerous musicians and ensembles including Jake Vegas, Ronnie King, Hot Orange Big Band, Jay Craig, Frank Griffith, Guillemots, Paloma Faith, and many others.
His 2015 album “Twentysix Three” was ranked among the best jazz albums of the year by The Telegraph. His latest album, “Tell Duke” (2024), is a tribute to the music of late American jazz legends Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. On this album, Tibaldi is joined by Leon Brenko (piano), Ares Tavolazzi (double bass), and Marco Quarantotto (drums), with the latter two hailing from Pula and Italy respectively.
Tibaldi is also a dedicated music educator. Since 2009, he has been teaching saxophone at Hampton Court House School in Surrey, and has also served as a visiting lecturer at Goldsmiths College and the University of Westminster.
His style is known for blending elements of jazz, funk, soul, and world music, always rooted in a deep respect for jazz tradition while exploring new sonic territories.

Joining the quartet is the legendary Ares Tavolazzi, born in Ferrara in 1948, a key figure in Italian jazz.
Tavolazzi studied cello and double bass at the Music School of Ferrara and began his career playing bass in a beat band with singer Carmen Villani and drummer Ellade Bandini. In 1969, he co-founded The Pleasure Machine with Bandini and Vince Tempera, releasing five singles over the next three years.
In 1973, Tavolazzi joined the avant-garde jazz-rock group Area, replacing bassist Patrick Djivas. He remained with the band until 1983, contributing to their innovative blend of rock, jazz, and experimental music. His first album with Area was “Caution Radiation Area” (1974).
After his time with Area, Tavolazzi worked with many renowned Italian artists including Mina, Eugenio Finardi, Paolo Conte, Paolo Fresu, and Vinicio Capossela. He was also a regular collaborator with Francesco Guccini, performing on all of his albums and tours from 1983 to 2004.
Recognized internationally for his technical virtuosity and stylistic versatility, Ares Tavolazzi remains one of Italy’s most respected bassists.
