Let us remind you—Ulysses Theatre is a special cultural project that unites theatre with a peaceful vision of artistic collaboration and networking among artists of different schools and aesthetics.

It was founded in 2001 by actor Rade Šerbedžija, writer Borislav Vujčić, and director Lenka Udovički. One of its hallmarks is the 19th-century Austro-Hungarian fortress Minor, a historical site on Mali Brijun that has hosted many theatrical masterpieces—from ancient playwrights Sophocles and Euripides, to Shakespeare, Molière, and 20th–21st century classics like Brecht, Krleža, Peter Weiss, Camus, Tennessee Williams, and Edward Albee.

Some plays premiered on Mali Brijun, such as Odysseus by Goran Stefanovski and Drunken Night 1918 and Shakespeare in the Kremlin by the legendary writer Ivo Štivičić, both written specifically for Ulysses.

While Veliki Brijun serves as the summer home for Ulysses’ artistic and production team, it often becomes a stage itself. This year, two premieres—Majke and Svijet i sve u njemu / Bejturan i ruža—will be performed at different locations on the island.

The celebration at the Small Roman Theatre is imagined as a voyage through memory, echoing the symbolic ritual of sailing by boat from Fažana to the Brijuni Islands for every Ulysses performance or concert. The natural surroundings, the salty sea air, historic walls, and summer evenings have been constants since the theatre’s founding—and there are few venues that can recreate that feeling as faithfully as the Small Roman Theatre.

Ulysses Theatre has long drawn public attention for the big names from Croatia, the region, and the world who regularly contribute their artistic talents. As noted back in 2001, Ulysses is a “place for the fusion of spiritually kindred artists, open to all who seek to expand aesthetic and spiritual horizons.”

This approach has provided a haven for many theatre artists affected by historical upheavals and exile. Ulysses’ work and presence have also been supported by music stars such as Josipa Lisac, Đorđe Balašević, Damir Urban, Miroslav Tadić, Darko Rundek, Vlatko Stefanovski, Arsen Dedić, Mate Meštrović, Dado Topić, Vlado Kreslin, Livio Morosin, Dubioza Kolektiv, and many others.

Ulysses’ dedication to cultural exchange and pacifism has gained international recognition, drawing visits from Hollywood greats such as Vanessa Redgrave, Angelina Jolie, Annette Bening, and Ralph Fiennes—some as spectators, others as performers in Ulysses productions.

This incredible history will be celebrated with an emotional, historical, and visually stunning anniversary spectacle.

The traditional stage at Fort Minor would be far too small for the expected audience—so don’t be surprised if tickets for the grand amphitheatre of the Small Roman Theatre sell out fast.
